Abu Ghraib dog handler gets 90 days
FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) — A military jury sentenced an Army dog handler to 90 days hard labor and a reduction in rank Friday for allowing his Belgian shepherd to bark within inches of an Iraqi detainee’s face at Abu Ghraib prison.
Army Sgt. Santos Cardona became the 11th soldier convicted of crimes stemming from the abuse of inmates at the prison in late 2003 and early 2004.
He was found guilty of dereliction of duty and aggravated assault for allowing his dog to bark in the face of a kneeling detainee at the request of another soldier who wasn’t an interrogator.
Without getting too side-tracked or hung up on semantics, this idea that what occurred at Abu Ghraib prison constitutes “torture” and/or “abuse” would be laughable if it weren’t so damn tragic in that honorable men and women have gone to jail over it. Just so we’re clear, the so-called “torture” consisted of, at worst, terror suspects being subjected to listening to loud music, having dogs bark at them, and be forced to do such horrific things as sleep or stand in uncomfortable positions. By those standards, I guess my landlord could be tried and convicted as a torturer. Hell, I’m subjected to those things (not to mention a bad landscaping job) at my apartment every day!
Sgt. Cardona’s military lawyer put it quite succinctly: “What we have here is a soldier who let his dog get too close to a detainee, and the dog barked.”
Some scumbag prisoner who we reasonably believe may have information or know of some other scumbag with same information that may save American lives has a dog barking too close to him and our military personnel are jailed for this? This is a sham. It’s Bizarro World. It’s Kafkaesque. If this isn’t Oprah Nation at it’s finest, what is?
Given that he initially faced up to three years, thank god it’s only 90 days. It’s still 90 days too long.

Jay should copyright the term “Oprah-fication” and use its trademark to spear the Orca whale!
I thought you loved the military so much, so anything they do should be beyond questioning cause that means you are a traitor or a coward. I guess the unnecessary war with all that death and destruction bothers you less than this 90 day sentence, you are a fascist geek.
