Bill Maher noted on this past Friday’s show (and I’m paraphrasing) that only in America can a person use, “No, officer, I wasn’t drunk. I was high.” as a legitimate defense against why they may have crashed their car into, say, a lake or in this case a security barrier..
Let’s put aside the witness testimony from officers who first responded to the scene of Patrick Kennedy’s car crash - that they smelled an odor of alcohol, etc. Let’s assume that he was in fact high on Ambien, et. al, and not drunk. So what? You can’t drive under the influence of alcohol. You can’t spark a Jimi Hendrix-sized spliff, go out and cruise the set. But you get a pass if you decide to pop a handful of Oxicontin and get behind the wheel? It’s ludicrous.
His may be an excuse. It certainly isn’t a defense. He’s still an irresponsible dick who could’ve easily killed or maimed a van-load of kids.
But he’ll get a pass on this, as all Kennedy’s do. Why? Because he’s a Kennedy. As an added bonus, he’s playing the victim card to a tee. So he gets media exposure and he gets to look like the hero who’s just doing what he can to rid himself of this horrific disease. Well played, Mr. Kennedy. Well played.
