Via Yahoo! News - City to crackdown on illegal immigration:

HAZLETON, Pa. - With tensions rising and its police department and municipal budget stretched thin, this small northeastern Pennsylvania city is about to begin what the mayor calls one of the toughest crackdowns on illegal immigrants in the United States.

“Illegal immigrants are destroying the city,” said Mayor Lou Barletta, a Republican. “I don’t want them here, period.”

Last week Barletta introduced, and the City Council tentatively approved, a measure that would revoke the business licenses of companies that employ illegal immigrants; impose $1,000 fines on landlords who rent to illegal immigrants; and make English the city’s official language.

Good on ya, Mr. Barletta. Good on ya. If the federal government is going to stick its head in the sand over this political time bomb, then action must be taken at the local-most level.

On what legal grounds can La Raza possibly consider a lawsuit? The crackdown is on ILLEGALS not Hispanics. The fact that this stupidity is even listened to makes my head hurt with frustration.

That’s an easy one, Bryan - they just blur the scope of the issue. It’s easier to posit the issue as being about Hispanics rather than about illegals. Any subsequent disagreement on your part makes you a racist and turns this into a civil rights issue.

Yeah, I understand that. But beyond their positioning in the argument my question was in regards to the actual court of law. How can they keep a straight face while threatening to sue someone who is simply enforcing the laws on the books as they are written?
